Scene 1

Opening Scene

1 lines
Rhaenyra
(Narrating) As the first century of the Targaryen dynasty came to a close, the health of the Old King, Jaehaerys, was failing.
Scene 2

Cut To: Int. Harrenhal

12 lines
The shot pans up from the floor to two maesters carrying a large chest through a crowded room towards the king.
Rhaenyra
(Narrating) In those days, House Targaryen stood at the height of its strength with 10 adult dragons under its yoke. No power in the world could stand against it.
Cut to a wide shot of the room.
Rhaenyra
(Narrating) King Jaehaerys reigned over nearly 60 years of peace and prosperity. But tragedy had claimed both his sons, leaving his succession in doubt. So, in the year 101, the Old King called a Great Council to choose an heir.
The maesters bring the chest to Jaehaerys.
Rhaenyra
(Narrating) Over a thousand lords made the journey to Harrenhal. Fourteen succession claims were heard but only two were truly considered: Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the King's eldest descendant, and her younger cousin, Prince Viserys Targaryen, the King's eldest male descendant.
The shot cuts to each Targaryen as the narration mentions them. The chest is opened. Jaehaerys pulls out a scroll and reads it.
Jaehaerys
It is declared by all lords paramount and lords vassal of the Seven Kingdoms that Prince Viserys Targaryen be made Prince of Dragonstone.
Viserys and his wife Aemma look relieved, while Rhaenys remains mostly expressionless.
Rhaenyra
(Narrating) Rhaenys, a woman, would not inherit the Iron Throne. The lords instead chose Viserys… my father.
Viserys and Rhaenys exchange glances.
Rhaenyra
(Narrating) Jaehaerys called the Great Council to prevent a war being fought over his succession. For he knew the cold truth. The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon... was itself.
Scene 3

Cut To: Ext. Sky, Day

16 lines
Fade into fields of clouds. After a few moments, Rhaenyra comes into frame riding Syrax. Eventually they approach the Red Keep, and behind it, King's Landing and the Dragonpit. A shot from the ground shows Syrax flying overhead as peasants walk the streets. Syrax lands in some dirt by the Dragonpit. Two Dragonkeepers approach. The older one holds his spear out to prevent the younger one from getting too close.
Dragonkeeper Elder
Dohaeras, Syrax.
The older Dragonkeeper nods at the younger.
Young Dragonkeeper
Umbas. Rybas.
Rhaenyra hops off of Syrax's back and pets her neck.
Harrold
Welcome back, Princess.
Rhaenyra looks over to see Ser Harrold Westerling nearby on horseback.
Harrold
I trust your ride was pleasant.
Rhaenyra
Try not to look too relieved, ser.
Harrold
I am relieved. Every time that golden beast brings you back unspoiled, it saves my head from a spike.
Rhaenyra approaches a carriage where Alicent Hightower is standing.
Alicent
Syrax is growing quickly. She'll soon be as large as Caraxes.
Rhaenyra
That's almost large enough to saddle two.
Alicent
I believe I'm quite content as a spectator, thank you.
Dragonkeeper Elder
Dohaeras. Naejot.
The dragonkeepers lead Syrax into the Dragonpit. Cut to Rhaenyra and Alicent's carriage leaving, with various shots of the city. The carriage eventually arrives at the Red Keep.
Scene 4

Cut To: Int. Red Keep, Day

17 lines
Rhaenyra and Alicent walk through a courtyard in the Red Keep and through various halls before arriving at Aemma's room. Aemma is heavily pregnant, laying on a couch and attended by various servants.
Aemma
Ah... Rhaenyra.
The camera pans from Aemma to Rhaenyra as she and Alicent enter.
Aemma
You know I don't like you to go flying while I'm in this condition.
Rhaenyra
You don't like me to go flying while you're in any condition.
Alicent
Your Grace.
Aemma
Good morrow, Alicent.
Rhaenyra
Did you sleep?
Aemma
I slept.
Rhaenyra
How long?
Rhaenyra sits at Aemma's feet.
Aemma
I don't need mothering, Rhaenyra.
Rhaenyra
Well, here you are, surrounded by attendants, all focused on the babe. Someone has to attend to you.
Aemma
You will lie in this bed soon enough, Rhaenyra. This discomfort is how we serve the realm.
Rhaenyra
I'd rather serve as a knight and ride to battle and glory.
Aemma laughs.
Aemma
We have royal wombs, you and I. The child bed is our battlefield. We must learn to face it with a stiff lip. Now take a bath. You stink of dragon.
Scene 5

Cut To: Int. Small Council Chamber, Day

32 lines
King Viserys sits at the head of the small council table eating.
Viserys
So, I said to him, "Well, I believe you might be looking up the wrong end."
The camera cuts back to show the full room. The members of the small council laugh, save for Corlys Velaryon. The camera cuts to him.
Corlys
My lords. The growing alliance among the Free Cities has taken to styling itself "the Triarchy."
He stands up and unrolls a map of the Stepstones onto the table.
Corlys
They have massed on Bloodstone and are presently ridding the Stepstones of its pirate infestation.
Viserys
Well, that sounds suspiciously like good news, Lord Corlys.
Corlys
A man called Craghas Drahar has styled himself the prince-admiral of this Triarchy. They call him "The Crabfeeder" due to his inventive methods of punishing his enemies.
Rhaenyra enters the room.
Viserys
And are we meant to weep for dead pirates?
Corlys
No, Your Grace.
Viserys
Rhaenyra, you're late. The King's cupbearer must not be late. Leaves people wanting for cups.
Rhaenyra
I was visiting Mother.
Corlys sits down, looking frustrated.
Viserys
On dragonback?
Rhaenyra prepares some wine and begins serving the members of the small council.
Lyman
Your Grace, at Prince Daemon's urging, the crown has invested significant capital in the retraining and re-equipping of his City Watch. I thought you might urge your brother to fill his seat on the council and provide an assessment of his progress as commander of the Watch.
Viserys
Do you think Daemon is distracted by his present tasks? And that his thoughts and energies are occupied?
Lyman
Well, one would hope so, considering the associated costs.
Viserys
Then let us all consider your gold well-invested, Lord Beesbury.
Corlys
I would urge that you not allow this Triarchy much latitude in the Stepstones, Your Grace. If those shipping lanes should fall, it will beggar our ports.
Otto
The crown has heard your report, Lord Corlys, and takes it under advisement.
For a moment no one speaks until Corlys appears to concede.
Otto
Shall we discuss the Heir's Tournament, Your Grace?
Viserys
I would be delighted. Will the maesters' name day prediction hold, Mellos?
Mellos
You must understand that these things are mere estimations, my King, but we have all been poring over the moon charts, and we feel that our forecast is as accurate as it can be.
As Rhaenyra makes her way to Corlys, he holds out his hand to stop her from pouring him wine.
Lyman
The cost of the tournament is not negligible. Perhaps we might delay until the child is in hand?
Lyonel
Most of the lords and knights are certainly on their way to King's Landing already. To turn them back now…
Viserys
The tourney will take the better part of a week. Before the games are over, my son will be born, and the whole realm will celebrate.
Mellos
We have no way of predicting the sеx of the child.
Viserys
Of course, no maester's capable of rendering an opinion free of conditions, are they now? There's a boy in the Queen's belly. I know it. And my heir will soon put all of this damnable hand-wringing to rest himself.
Scene 6

Cut To: Int. Red Keep

33 lines
Cut to Rhaenyra and Harrold walking towards the throne room, shot from above at first before cutting behind them.
Harrold
He passed through the Red Keep's gates at first light.
Rhaenyra
Does my father know he's here?
Harrold
No.
Rhaenyra
Good.
Harrold opens the throne room. At the end of the hall, Daemon sits in the Iron Throne.
Harrold
Gods be good.
Rhaenyra
It's all right, ser.
Rhaenyra approaches Daemon while Harrold stands guard in the open doorway.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) What do you think you're doing, uncle?
Daemon
(In High Valyrian) Sitting. This could well be my chair one day.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) Not if you're executed for treason. You haven't come to court in an age.
Daemon
Aye... (In High Valyrian) Court is so dreadfully boring.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) Then why come back at all?
Rhaenyra stops at the edge of the stairs leading to the throne.
Daemon
(In High Valyrian) I heard your father was hosting a tournament in my honor.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) The tournament is for his heir.
Daemon
(In High Valyrian) Just as I said.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) His new heir.
Daemon stands and approaches Rhaenyra.
Daemon
(In High Valyrian) Until your mother brings forth a son, you are all cursed with me.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) Then I shall hope for a brother.
Daemon stops in front of Rhaenyra. They both smirk at each other.
Daemon
I bought you something.
He holds out a necklace. Rhaenyra inspects it.
Daemon
Do you know what it is?
Rhaenyra
It's Valyrian steel. Like Dark Sister.
Daemon pulls the necklace back.
Daemon
Turn around.
Rhaenyra turns and pulls her long hair away from her neck. She takes off her necklace and Daemon puts the new one on her.
Daemon
Now... you and I both own a small piece of our ancestry.
Rhaenyra turns around.
Daemon
(In High Valyrian) Beautiful.
Scene 7

Cut To: Ext. Red Keep, Godswood, Day

32 lines
The camera pans through the leaves of a weirwood tree.
Alicent
Did you read it?
Rhaenyra
Of course, I read it.
Alicent
When Princess Nymeria arrived in Dorne, who did she take to husband?
Rhaenyra
A man.
Alicent
What was his name?
Rhaenyra
Lord Something.
Rhaenyra lays with her head in Alicent's lap near the weirwood. Alicent has a large book open.
Alicent
If you answer with "Lord Something," Septa Marlow will be furious.
Rhaenyra
She's funny when she's furious.
Alicent
You're always like this when you're worried.
Rhaenyra
Like what?
Alicent
Disagreeable. You're worried your father is about to overshadow you with a son.
Rhaenyra
I only worry for my mother. I hope for my father that he gets a son. As long as I can recall, it's all he's wanted.
Alicent
You want him to have a son?
Rhaenyra
I want to fly with you on dragon-back, see the great wonders across the Narrow Sea, and eat only cake.
Alicent
I'm being serious.
Rhaenyra
I never jest about cake.
Alicent
You aren't worried about your position?
Rhaenyra
I like this position. It's quite comfortable.
Alicent shuts the book and stands up.
Rhaenyra
Where are you going?
Alicent
Home. The hour has grown late.
Rhaenyra gets up.
Rhaenyra
Princess Nymeria led her Rhoynar across the Narrow Sea on 10,000 ships to flee their Valyrian pursuers. She took Lord Mors Martell of Dorne to husband and burned her own fleet off Sunspear to show her people that they were finished running.
Rhaenyra rips a page out of the book.
Alicent
What are you doing?
Rhaenyra
So you remember.
Alicent
If, if the Septa sees this book, then-
Rhaenyra
Fսck the Septa.
Alicent
Rhaenyra!
They laugh and walk out of the godswood together.
Scene 8

Cut To: Int. Viserys's Chambers, Evening

17 lines
The camera cuts to a shot of the sun setting through a window. The camera pulls back inside to show Maester Mickon investigating a wound on Viserys's back.
Viserys
Is it healing?
Mellos
It has grown slightly, Your Grace.
The camera continues pulling into the room to show Mellos standing nearby. Viserys flinches as Mickon pokes at the wound.
Otto
Can you say yet what it is?
The camera cuts to show the room from the opposite angle. Otto looks on while Mellos walks past him.
Mickon
We've sent inquiries to the Citadel. They are searching the texts for similar cases.
Viserys
It's a small cut from sitting the throne. It's nothing.
Otto approaches Mellos nearby. They talk quietly.
Mellos
The King has been under heavy stresses preparing for the birth. Bad humors of the mind can adversely affect the body.
Otto
Whatever it is, it needs to be kept quiet.
Mellos looks down before walking back to Viserys.
Mellos
We should leech it again, Mickon.
Mickon
It's a wound that refuses to heal, Grand Maester. Might I suggest cauterization?
Mellos
Cauterization would be a wise course of treatment, Your Grace. It will be painful-
Viserys
Fine. Fine.
Viserys gets up and leaves.
Scene 9

Cut To: Int. Aemma's Chambers

25 lines
Cut to candles burning, then Aemma in a bath.
Viserys
You spend more time in that bath than I do on the throne.
Aemma
This is the only place I can find comfort these days.
Viserys sits next to the bath and dips his hands in.
Viserys
It's tepid.
Aemma
It's as warm as the maesters will allow.
Viserys
Don't they know dragons prefer heat?
Aemma
Hm. After this miserable pregnancy, I wouldn't be surprised if I hatched an actual dragon.
Viserys
Then he will be loved and cherished.
Viserys kisses her hand.
Aemma
Rhaenyra has already declared that she is to have a sister.
Viserys
Really?
Aemma
She even named her.
Viserys
Dare I ask?
Aemma
Visenya. She chose a dragon's egg for the cradle that she said reminded her of Vhagar.
Viserys
Gods be good. This family already has its Visenya.
Aemma
Has there been any word from your dear brother?
Viserys
Not since I named him Commander of the City Watch. I'm sure he will reemerge for the tourney. He could never stay away from the lists.
Aemma
The tourney to celebrate the firstborn son that we presently do not have. You do understand nothing will cause the babe to grow a cock if it does not already possess one?
Viserys
This child is a boy, Aemma.
She scoffs.
Viserys
I'm certain of it. I've never been more certain of anything. The dream. It was clearer than a memory. Our son was born wearing Aegon's iron crown. When I heard the sound of thundering hooves splintering shields, and ringing swords, I placed our son upon the Iron Throne as the bells of the Grand Sept tolled and all the dragons roared as one.
Aemma
Born wearing a crown? Gods spare me... birth is unpleasant enough as it is.
Viserys kisses her hand again.
Aemma
This is the last time, Viserys. I've lost one babe in the cradle, had two stillbirths, and two pregnancies ended well before their term. That's five in twice as many years. I know it is my duty to provide you an heir, and I'm sorry if I have failed you in that. I am. But I've mourned all the dead children I can.
Scene 10

Cut To: Ext. King's Landing, Night

14 lines
Members of the city watch, all wearing gold cloaks, bang their chests as Daemon walks through their ranks.
Randyll
Commander on the floor!
The banging stops.
Daemon
When I took command of the Watch, you were stray mongrels, starving and undisciplined. Now you're a pack of hounds. You're sated and honed for the hunt.
The watchmen howl.
Daemon
My brother's city has fallen into squalor. Crime of every breed has been allowed to thrive. No longer. Beginning tonight, King's Landing will learn to fear the color gold.
The watchmen cheer. Daemon walks ahead. A gate is opened and groups of them pour out into the city. Various shots show peasants throughout the city being chased and beaten by watchmen. Daemon leads a group into a square where punishments are being carried out. One man is held while a guard cuts his hand off.
Randyll
Raper!
Randyll points towards a man and brings him into a clearing before Daemon before castrating him as he screams, tossing the testes of the man onto a stump nearby. Daemon stands stoically while the chaos unfolds around him.
Randyll
Thief!
A man's hand is cut off. Randyll approaches Daemon and points him towards another man.
Randyll
Murderer!
Daemon unsheathes his sword and approaches the accused man. The man screams as Daemon lifts his sword and the shot cuts to Daemon placing the man's head on a cart full of other dismembered human parts. The cart pulls away as Otto's voice comes through.
Otto
It was an unprecedented roundup of criminals of every ilk. Your brother made a public show of it, meting out the summary judgments himself.
Scene 11

Cut To: Int. Small Council Chamber, Day

40 lines
Otto
I'm told they needed a two-horse cart to haul away the resulting dismemberments when it was done.
Otto and Viserys enter the small council chamber.
Viserys
Gods be good.
Otto
The Prince cannot be allowed to act with this kind of unchecked impunity.
As the pair approach the table, the camera pans to show Daemon seated in his spot while the other councilors rise for the King's entrance.
Daemon
Brother.
Viserys
Daemon.
Daemon
Carry on. You were saying something about my impunity.
Otto
You are to explain your doings with the City Watch.
Otto and Viserys place large marbles into plates at their seats.
Viserys
Your new "gold cloaks" made quite the impression last night, didn't they?
Daemon
Did they?
Everyone sits down.
Otto
The City Watch is not a sword to be wielded at your whim. They're an extension of the crown.
Daemon
The Watch was enforcing the crown's laws. Wouldn't you agree, Lord Strong?
Lyonel
My Prince, I don't think-
Otto
Making a public spectacle of wanton brutality is hardly in line with our laws.
Daemon
Nobles from every corner of the realm are right now descending upon King's Landing for my brother's tourney. Do you want them mugged, raped, murdered? You mightn't know this unless you left the safety of the Red Keep, but much of King's Landing is seen by the smallfolk as lawless and terrifying. Our city should be safe for all its people.
Viserys
I agree. I just hope you don't have to maim half of my city to achieve this.
Daemon
Time will tell.
Corlys
We installed Prince Daemon as commander to promote law and order. The criminal element should fear the City Watch.
Daemon
Thank you for your support, Lord Corlys.
Otto
If only the Prince would show the same devotion to his lady wife as he does his work, Your Grace. You've not been seen in the Vale or at Runestone for quite some time.
Daemon
I think my bronze bitch is happier for my absence.
Otto
Lady Rhea is your wife; a good and honorable lady of the Vale.
Daemon
In the Vale, men are said to fսck sheep instead of women. I can assure you, the sheep are prettier.
Lyman
Dear me.
Otto
You made a vow before the Seven to honor your wife in marriage.
Daemon
Well, I'd gladly give Lady Rhea to you, Lord Hightower, if you're in want of a woman to warm your bed. Your own lady wife passed recently.
Otto stands up in anger.
Daemon
Did she not?
Viserys
Otto.
Daemon
Perhaps you aren't ready to move on just yet.
Viserys
You know how my brother makes sport of provoking you. Must you indulge him?
Otto sits back down.
Otto
My apologies, Your Grace.
Viserys
This council has, at great expense, bettered the City Watch to your exacting standards. Enforce my laws, but understand: Any further performances like last night's will be answered.
Daemon
Understood, Your Grace.
Daemon gets up and leaves.
Viserys
King's Landing has been in decline since my grandmother passed. In the end... this new City Watch might be a good thing.
Scene 12

Cut To: Int. Brothel

5 lines
A crowd of onlookers watch as Daemon and Mysaria have sex. After a few moments, Daemon looks frustrated and walks towards a window, draping a rug over himself.
Mysaria
What troubles you, my Prince?
Mysaria walks over to him.
Mysaria
I could bring in another. Perhaps a maiden. I have several. I could even arrange one with silver hair. You are Daemon Targaryen. Rider of Caraxes. Wielder of Dark Sister. The King cannot replace you.
She embraces him.
Scene 13

Cut To: Ext. Stadium

38 lines
Rhaenyra ascends some stairs to a large balcony.
Viserys
Be welcome! I know many of you have traveled long leagues to be at these games. But I promise, you will not be disappointed.
Rhaenyra finds her seat as Viserys stands in the midst of other nobles, addressing the crowd.
Viserys
When I look at the fine knights in these lists, I see a group without equal in our histories. And this great day has been made more auspicious by the news that I am happy to share: Queen Aemma has begun her labors!
The crowd cheers and an aerial shot shows the scale of the tournament.
Viserys
May the luck of the Seven shine upon all combatants!
Two knights joust in the center of the stadium. On the second run, one is dismounted. The audience cheers and the winner approaches the balcony, bowing.
Rhaenyra
A mystery knight?
Alicent
No, a Cole, of the Stormlands.
Rhaenyra
I've never heard of House Cole.
Boremund Baratheon approaches the balcony on horseback.
Boremund
Princess Rhaenys Targaryen! I would humbly ask for the favor of "The Queen Who Never Was."
The nobles give varying expressions. Rhaenys approaches and drops a wreath on Boremund's lance.
Rhaenys
Good fortune to you, cousin.
Boremund
I would gladly take it if I thought I needed it.
They smile. Otto leans over and whispers in Viserys's ear.
Otto
You could have Baratheon's tongue for that.
Viserys
Tongues will not change the succession. Let them wag.
Rhaenys sits down and exchanges a look with her husband, Corlys.
Rhaenyra
Lord Stokeworth's daughter is promised to that young Tarly squire.
Alicent
Lord Massey's son?
Rhaenyra
Mm-hm. They're to be married as soon as he wins his knighthood.
Alicent
Best get on with it. I heard that Lady Elinor is hiding a swollen belly beneath her dress.
Boremund and Criston joust, with Boremund being dismounted. Harrold kneels next to Rhaenyra's seat.
Rhaenyra
What do you know about this Ser Criston Cole, Ser Harrold?
Harrold
I'm told Ser Criston is common-born, son of Lord Dondarrion's steward. But other than that, and the fact that he's just unhorsed both of the Baratheon lads, I really couldn't say.
Harrold rises and walks away. A Targaryen flag is placed and a group of knights ride out into the field.
Master Of Revels
Prince Daemon of House Targaryen, Prince of the City, will now choose his first opponent!
Daemon rides out and surveys the assembled jousters, eventually picking one wearing the Hightower sigil. Viserys and Otto exchange glances.
Master Of Revels
For his first challenge, Prince Daemon Targaryen chooses Ser Gwayne Hightower of Oldtown, eldest son of the Hand of the King.
Otto shakes his head. Corlys looks mildly amused. Otto and Gwayne prepare to joust. Rhaenyra grabs the hand of Alicent, who looks nervous. Lyman hands an attendant some money.
Lyman
Five dragons on Daemon.
Daemon glances at the crowd one last time to make eye contact with Otto before charging forward. Daemon is hit and loses his lance but isn't dismounted. Otto looks pleased. Both riders get new lances and charge again. At the last minute, Daemon swings his lance in front of the hooves of Gwayne's horse, sending both tumbling over. Gwayne is injured but gets up, with varying reactions from the crowd and nobles. Daemon rides in front of the balcony. Rhaenyra and Alicent approach.
Rhaenyra
Nicely done, Uncle.
Daemon
Thank you, Princess. Now, I'm fairly certain I can win these games, Lady Alicent. Having your favor would all but assure it.
Alicent grabs a wreath and shares a glance with Otto before dropping it on Daemon's lance.
Alicent
Good luck, my Prince.
A maester whispers something in Otto's ear, who then relays it to Viserys as Rhaenyra and Alicent sit back down. Viserys looks nervous and stands up. Aemma begins to scream as the scene cuts.
Scene 14

Cut To: Int. Bedchamber

15 lines
Attendants stand nearby nervously as Viserys enters the room.
Viserys
What's happening?
The camera follows Viserys as he walks into the room. Aemma is splayed on the bed with an attendant at her side. Mellos approaches Viserys.
Mellos
The infant is in breech, Your Grace. All attempts to turn the babe have failed.
Aemma's pained scream continues.
Viserys
Do something for her!
Mellos
We've given her as much milk of the poppy as we can without risking the child. Your Queen is a strong woman. She's fighting with all her might, but it may not be enough.
Viserys
Aemma!
He walks over and the attendants move out of the way.
Viserys
Aemma, I'm here. I'm here.
Aemma
Help me, please…
Viserys
I'm here. It's all right. It's all right.
Aemma
I don't wanna do this.
Viserys
You're going to be alright. You're going to be alright.
Aemma continues screaming as attendants adjust her positioning.
Scene 15

Cut To: Ext. Stadium

13 lines
The tournament continues. A knight is dismounted and the crowd cheers. He pulls his opponent off his horse and begins to attack him, to varying reactions from the crowd.
Onlooker
Kill him!
Rhaenys
And the day grows ugly.
The knights continue fighting as Rhaenys and Corlys talk.
Corlys
I wonder if this is how we should celebrate the birth of our future king.
Rhaenys
Hm.
Corlys
With wanton violence.
Rhaenys
It's been 70 years since King Maegor's end.
Someone tackles the attacking knight out of the way.
Rhaenys
These knights are as green as summer grass. None have known real war. Their lords sent them to the tourney field with fists full of steel and balls full of seed, and we expect them to act with honor and grace.
Rhaenys and Corlys's children, Laena and Laenor, watch the fight, with Laena grabbing her brother's arm.
Rhaenys
It's a marvel that war didn't break out at first blood.
The attacking knight slams his axe down, killing the other knight. The onlookers variably gasp or cheer, including Rhaenyra. A squire vomits as the dead knight is taken away. Shots of other fights follow interspersed with reactions from Laena and Alicent, the latter of whom picks her fingernails.
Scene 16

Cut To: Int. Bedchamber

12 lines
Aemma sighs as she is attended. Viserys sits at her side, holding her hand.
Viserys
Mellos.
Mellos
Your Grace. If you would.
Mellos walks away and Viserys kisses Aemma's hand before following.
Mellos
During a difficult birth, it sometimes becomes necessary for the father to make an impossible choice.
Viserys
Well, speak it.
Mellos
To sacrifice one... or to lose them both. There is a chance that we can save the child. A technique is taught at the Citadel, which involves cutting directly into the womb to free the infant. But the resulting blood loss-
Viserys
Seven Hells, Mellos.
Viserys looks at Aemma across the room.
Viserys
You can save the child?
Mellos
We must either act now or leave it with the gods.
Viserys tries to compose himself.
Scene 17

Cut To: Ext. Stadium

3 lines
A dead knight is dragged away.
Master Of Revels
Ser Criston Cole will now tilt against Ser Daemon Targaryen, Prince of the City!
Daemon and Criston prepare to joust. Music swells as they begin. Neither is dismounted on their first go. Rhaenyra looks on nervously. Both grab new lances. As they collide again, the scene cuts.
Scene 18

Cut To: Int. Bedchamber

30 lines
Viserys kisses Aemma's hand as she stirs.
Aemma
Viserys.
Viserys
Yes. They're going to bring the babe out now.
Aemma
Mm.
Viserys nods and some of the attendants move around the bed.
Viserys
I love you.
Mickon and an attendant pull Aemma down the bed.
Aemma
What is happening?
Viserys
No, it's all right.
Aemma
No... what is happening? Viserys, what…
Viserys
No, it's all right.
Aemma
Wh-what are you doing?
Viserys
They're going to bring the babe out.
Aemma
How are they…
Viserys
It's all right.
Aemma
Viserys, please.
The attendants begin to hold Aemma in place and restrain her.
Viserys
It's all right.
Aemma
No, I'm scared. Not in…
Viserys
Don't be scared.
Aemma
What is happening?
Viserys
Don't be scared. They're going to bring the babe out.
Aemma
Oh no.
Viserys
It's all right. They're going to bring the babe out.
An attendant hands Mellos a sharp tool.
Aemma
No! No! No!
Mellos
I'm making the first incision.
Aemma
No, no, no! Viserys, no! Please! No, no, no!
Viserys
Don't be scared.
Aemma's screams melt into the screams of the crowd as the shot cuts back to the tournament.
Scene 19

Cut To: Ext. Stadium

20 lines
Criston and Daemon collide again. Daemon lands on the barrier in the center of the joust, just barely failing to get back on his horse before falling off the end. He pushes away a man helping him up as Criston dismounts.
Daemon
Sword!
A squire brings Daemon his sword.
Master Of Revels
Prince Daemon Targaryen wishes to continue in a contest of arms!
Criston approaches Daemon with his morningstar. Shots of the duel and Aemma giving birth are interspersed with each other. As the baby is pulled from Aemma, Criston hits Daemon from behind, pinning one of his arms to the ground with his boot.
Criston
Yield. Yield.
Daemon yields after a moment of pause, swatting Criston's hand away as he gets up. As Daemon surveys the crowd, cut to Viserys cradling Aemma's corpse. Cut back as Rhaenyra and Alicent run to the edge of the balcony as Criston approaches.
Alicent
Gods. He's Dornish.
Criston
I was hoping to ask for the Princess's favor.
Rhaenyra tosses a wreath down to him.
Rhaenyra
I wish you luck, Ser Criston.
Criston
Princess.
Criston leaves and Rhaenyra smiles. Otto enters the balcony. Cut to a shot of Aemma dead on the bed, blood everywhere. Viserys sits beside her as Mellos brings the baby over. The attendants look on silently.
Mellos
Congratulations, Your Grace. You have a son.
Viserys
It's a boy?
Mellos
A new heir, Your Grace.
Back at the tournament, Otto whispers in Lyonel's ear. Lyonel leans over to Lyman as Otto walks over to Corlys and whispers to him as well. Cut back to the bedchamber.
Mellos
Had you and the Queen chosen a name?
Viserys
Baelon.
Mellos's expression drops as the baby ceases making noise. Back at the tournament, the members of the small council leave as other assembled nobles get up and watch. Rhaenyra looks back out at the tournament, solemn.
Scene 20

Cut To: Ext. Field, Day

9 lines
The camera pans from rocky shores to a large green field where people are gathered for Aemma and Baelon's funeral. Both are wrapped in cloth on pyres. Syrax sits on a hill at the edge of the field. Cut to Rhaenyra's grief-stricken face. Daemon walks over and whispers in her ear.
Daemon
They're waiting for you.
A few shots show the various attendees.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) I wonder if, during those few hours my brother lived, my father finally found happiness.
Daemon
(In High Valyrian) Your father needs you more now than he ever has.
Rhaenyra
(In High Valyrian) I will never be a son.
After a moment, Rhaenyra steps forward. Syrax watches her. Rhaenyra attempts to speak, but the word gets caught in her throat. She takes a look back at her father, who doesn't return the look.
Rhaenyra
Dracarys.
Syrax crawls forward and lights the funeral pyres.
Scene 21

Cut To: Int. Small Council Chamber

37 lines
Cut to a profile of Otto as he sits. Behind him, Viserys enters with Ryam Redwyne. The councillors rise. Viserys sits at the head of the table. Ryam places Viserys's council marble down and the others sit, save for Corlys who prepares the wine.
Viserys
Where's Rhaenyra?
Otto
Your Grace. This is the last thing any of us wish to discuss at this dark hour, but I consider the matter urgent.
Viserys
What matter?
Otto
That of your succession. These recent tragedies have left you without an obvious heir.
Corlys turns around from the wine table.
Corlys
The King has an heir, my Lord Hand.
Otto
Despite how difficult this time is, Your Grace, I feel it important the succession be firmly in place for the stability of the realm.
Lyonel
The succession is already set, by precedent and by law.
Corlys sits at his end of the table.
Corlys
Shall we say his name? Daemon Targaryen.
Mellos
If Daemon were to remain the uncontested heir, it could destabilize the realm.
Corlys
The realm? Or this council?
Otto
No one here can know what Daemon would do were he king, but no one can doubt his ambition. Look at what he did with the gold cloaks. The City Watch is fiercely loyal to him. An army 2,000 strong.
Viserys
An army you gave him, Otto. I named Daemon Master of Laws, but you said he was a tyrant. As Master of Coin, you said he was a spendthrift that would beggar the realm. Putting Daemon in command of the City Watch was your solution!
Otto
A half-measure, Your Grace. The truth is, Daemon should be far away from this court.
Viserys
Daemon is my brother. My blood. And he will have his place at my court.
Mellos
Let him keep his place at court, Your Grace, but if the gods should visit some further tragedy on you, either by design or by accident-
Viserys
"Design"? What are you saying? My brother would murder me, take my crown? Are you?
Daemon is revealed to be listening nearby.
Viserys
Please. Daemon has ambition, yes, but not for the throne. He lacks the patience for it.
Otto
The gods have yet to make a man who lacks the patience for absolute power, Your Grace.
Mellos
Under such circumstances, it would not be an aberration for the King to name a successor.
Lyonel
Well, who else would have a claim?
Otto
The King's firstborn child.
Lyonel
Rhaenyra? A girl? No queen has ever sat the Iron Throne.
Mellos
That is only by tradition and precedent, Lord Strong.
Lyonel
If order and stability so concerns this council, then perhaps we shouldn't break 100 years of it by naming a girl heir.
Otto
Daemon would be a second Maegor, or worse. He is impulsive and violent. It is the duty of this council to protect the King and the realm from him. I'm sorry, Your Grace, but that is the truth as I see it, and I know that others here agree.
Viserys
I will not be made to choose between my brother and my daughter.
Corlys
You wouldn't have to, Your Grace. There are others who would have a claim.
Lyonel
Such as your wife, Lord Corlys? "The Queen Who Never Was?"
Corlys
Rhaenys was the only child of Jaehaerys' eldest son. She had a strong claim at the Great Council, and she already has a male heir.
Otto
Just moments ago, you announced your support for Daemon!
Lyonel
If we cannot agree on an heir, then how can we expect the realm-
Viserys
My wife and son are dead! I will not sit here and suffer crows that come to feast on their corpses!
The king stands to leave, and the others stand as he does so. Otto sighs as he sits back down.
Scene 22

Cut To: Int. Otto's Chambers

18 lines
Otto seals a letter with a wax seal at his desk.
Otto
Send a raven to Oldtown. Straight away.
Otto hands the letter to Mellos. Mellos nods and leaves as Alicent enters.
Mellos
My Lady.
Otto rises and hugs Alicent.
Otto
My darling. How's Rhaenyra?
Alicent
She lost her mother.
Otto
The Queen was well-loved by all. I found myself thinking of your own mother today.
Alicent
How is His Grace?
Otto
Very low. Which is why I sent for you.
Otto returns to his desk.
Otto
I thought you might go to him. Offer him comfort.
Alicent
In his chambers? I wouldn't know what to say.
Alicent bites at her nails.
Otto
Stop that. He'll be glad of a visitor.
Otto begins writing a letter. Alicent turns to leave.
Otto
You might wear one of your mother's dresses.
Alicent pauses for a moment before continuing.
Scene 23

Cut To: Int. Viserys's Chambers

10 lines
Cut to a sweeping shot of a model city that Viserys is making. He looks down at a ring of Aemma's. There's a knock at the door. He kisses the ring and puts it down. Ryam enters and nods, standing by to let Alicent in. She's holding a book.
Ryam
The Lady Alicent Hightower, Your Grace.
Viserys
What is it, Alicent?
Alicent
I thought I might come and look in on you, Your Grace. I brought a book.
Ryam leaves and closes the door behind him.
Viserys
That's very kind, thank you.
Alicent
It's a favorite of mine. I do know how passionate you are for the histories.
Viserys
Yes... I am.
Alicent sits in a chair on the other side of the model city.
Alicent
When my mother died... people only ever spoke to me in riddles. All I wanted was for someone to say that they were sorry for what happened to me. I'm very sorry, Your Grace.
Scene 24

Cut To: Int. Brothel

16 lines
Daemon sits at a table while gold cloaks and sex workers mingle around him, variably drinking, talking, or having sex. Mysaria approaches his table with wine.
Daemon
Thank you.
Mysaria
The King's sole heir once again.
She raises her wine and addresses the room.
Mysaria
Might we drink to our future?
Randyll
Quiet! Your Prince will speak! Silence!
Daemon looks around at the room as voiceover from Otto comes in.
Otto
Before we begin, Your Grace, I have a report I feel compelled to share.
The scene cuts back and forth between the brothel and the small council chamber.
Otto
Last night... Prince Daemon bought out one of the pleasure houses on the Street of Silk to entertain officers of the City Watch and other friends of his.
Daemon
King and Council have long rued my position as next in line for the throne.
Daemon stands.
Daemon
But dream and pray as they all might, it seems I'm not so easily replaced. The gods give just as the gods take away.
Otto
He toasted Prince Baelon.
Daemon
To the King's son.
Otto
Styling him... "The Heir for a Day."
Scene 25

Cut To: Int. Throne Room

26 lines
The doors open and Daemon enters to find Viserys in the throne, with four kingsguard in front of him as Otto's voiceover continues.
Otto
I corroborated this report with three separate witnesses. The evening was, by all accounts a... celebration.
Daemon
You cut the image of the conqueror, brother.
Viserys
Did you say it?
Daemon comes to a stop before the kingsguard.
Daemon
I don't know what you mean.
Viserys
You will address me as "Your Grace," or I will have my Kingsguard cut out your tongue. "The Heir for a Day." Did you say it?
Daemon
We must all mourn in our own way, Your Grace.
Viserys
My family has just been destroyed. But instead of being by my side, or Rhaenyra's, you chose to celebrate your own rise! Laughing with your whοres and your lickspittles! You have no allies at court but me! I have only ever defended you! Yet everything I've given you, you've thrown back in my face.
Daemon
You've only ever tried to send me away. To the Vale, to the City Watch, anywhere but by your side. Ten years you've been king, and yet not once have you asked me to be your Hand!
Viserys
Why would I do that?
Daemon
Because I'm your brother. And the blood of the dragon runs thick.
Viserys
Then why do you cut me so deeply?
Daemon
I've only ever spoken the truth. I see Otto Hightower for what he is.
Viserys
An unwavering and loyal Hand?
Daemon
A cսոt. A second son who stands to inherit nothing he doesn't seize for himself.
Viserys
Otto Hightower is a more honorable man than you could ever be.
Daemon
He doesn't protect you. I would.
Viserys
From what?
Daemon
Yourself. You're weak, Viserys. And that council of leeches knows it. They all prey on you for their own ends.
Viserys
I have decided to name a new heir.
Daemon
I'm your heir.
Viserys
Not anymore. You are to return to Runestone and your lady wife at once, and you are to do so without quarrel by order of your King.
Daemon steps forward and all four kingsguard move to stop him. He stops.
Daemon
Your Grace.
Daemon turns and leaves. Viserys slumps back in the chair and notices a cut on one of his fingers from the throne.
Scene 26

Cut To: Int. Red Keep

63 lines
Balerion's skull sits on display surrounded by candles. Viserys stands in front, holding his hand above some candles. Ryam enters with Rhaenyra, the latter of whom comes to stand near Viserys.
Rhaenyra
Father.
Viserys
Balerion was the last living creature to have seen Old Valyria before the Doom. Its greatness and its flaws. When you look at the dragons, what do you see?
Rhaenyra
What? You haven't spoken a word to me since Mother's funeral, and now you send your Kingsguard down-
Viserys
Answer me. It's important. What do you see?
Rhaenyra
I suppose I see us.
Viserys
Tell me.
Rhaenyra
Everyone says Targaryens are closer to gods than to men, but they say that because of our dragons. Without them, we're just like everyone else.
Viserys nods.
Viserys
The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They're a power man should never have trifled with. One that brought Valyria its doom. If we don't mind our own histories, it will do the same to us. Targaryen must understand this to be King... or Queen.
Rhaenyra turns to him sharply.
Viserys
I'm sorry, Rhaenyra. I have wasted the years since you were born wanting for a son.
Cut to a shot of Alicent helping Rhaenyra get dressed.
Viserys
You are the very best of your mother.
Cut back to Viserys and Rhaenyra.
Viserys
And I believe it, I know she did, that you could be a great ruling queen.
Rhaenyra
Daemon is your heir.
Cut back to Rhaenyra getting dressed.
Viserys
Daemon was not made to wear the crown.
Cut back to Viserys.
Viserys
But I believe that you were.
Cut back to Rhaenyra and Alicent.
Mellos
Corlys of House Velaryon.
Cut to the throne room. Corlys kneels in a room of other nobles.
Mellos
Lord of the Tides and Master of Driftmark.
Corlys
I, Corlys Velaryon, Lord of the Tides and Master of Driftmark, promise to be faithful to King Viserys and his named heir, the Princess Rhaenyra.
Cut back to Rhaenyra and Alicent.
Corlys
I pledge fealty to them and shall defend them against all enemies in good faith and without deceit.
Cut back to the throne room.
Corlys
I swear this by the old gods and the new.
Corlys stands.
Viserys
This is no trivial gesture, Rhaenyra.
Cut back to Viserys and Rhaenyra.
Viserys
A dragon's saddle is one thing, but the Iron Throne is the most dangerous seat in the realm.
Cut back to the throne room as Hobert Hightower kneels.
Hobert
I, Lord Hobert Hightower, Beacon of the South, Defender of the Citadel, and Voice of Oldtown, promise to be faithful to King Viserys and his named heir, the Princess Rhaenyra.
Cut to Rhaenys in profile standing among the nobles, then to Daemon handling his dragon Caraxes. Mysaria approaches.
Hobert
I pledge fealty to them and shall defend them against all enemies in good faith and without deceit. I swear this by the old gods and the new.
Daemon
Give me your hand.
Daemon holds Mysaria's hand to Caraxes's face. She smiles. Cut back to Rhaenyra in the throne room. Boremund stands before her before kneeling.
Boremund
I, Boremund Baratheon, promise to be faithful to King Viserys…
Cut to Rhaenyra. Boremund's dialogue fades out.
Viserys
There's something else that I need to tell you. It might be difficult for you to understand, but you must hear it.
Cut back to Viserys and Rhaenyra.
Viserys
Our histories, they tell us that Aegon looked across the Blackwater from Dragonstone, and saw a rich land ripe for the capture. But ambition alone is not what drove him to conquest. It was a dream. And just as Daenys foresaw the end of Valyria, Aegon foresaw the end of the world of men. 'Tis to begin with a terrible winter gusting out of the distant north.
Cut back to the throne room, where Rickon Stark kneels before Rhaenyra.
Rickon
I, Rickon Stark, Lord of Winterfell-
Viserys
Aegon saw absolute darkness riding on those winds. And whatever dwells within will destroy the world of the living. When this Great Winter comes, Rhaenyra…
Cut back to Viserys and Rhaenyra.
Viserys
All of Westeros must stand against it. And if the world of men is to survive, a Targaryen must be seated on the Iron Throne.
Cut back to the throne room. Mellos hangs a necklace around Rhaenyra's neck.
Viserys
A king or queen, strong enough to unite the realm against the cold and the dark.
Cut back to Viserys and Rhaenyra.
Viserys
Aegon called his dream "The Song of Ice and Fire."
Viserys grabs a holstered dagger around his belt.
Viserys
This secret, it's been passed from king to heir since Aegon's time. Now you must promise to carry it and protect it. Promise me this, Rhaenyra. Promise me.
Cut back to the throne room. Rhaenyra turns around to face her father in his throne. He stands and addresses the assembled nobles.
Viserys
I, Viserys Targaryen, first of his name…
Cut to Daemon and Mysaria riding Caraxes.
King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm, do hereby name…
Cut back to the throne room.
Viserys
Rhaenyra Targaryen Princess of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne.
All of those assembled bow their heads. Rhaenyra turns around to look out at the crowd and directly faces the camera. A dragon roars.
