Dunk
(Narrating) You might not remember him, but…
Arlan
Stay there. I'm coming back.
Arlan pees outside.
Dunk
...he was a true knight. Different than other men. Yeah. He had a peaceable nature. Quiet and humble.
A naked woman is seen sleeping inside the cottage.
Dunk
(Narrating) A veteran of a hundred wars, but an enemy to none. He always knew what was expectеd of him.
As he finishes peeing, Arlan investigatеs a wound on his arm.
Dunk
(Narrating) He never complained. Even as he was dying, he, he just…

Dunk
(Narrating) He just got on with it.
Cut to the road outside the cottage. A group of commoners watches as Dunk and Arlan prepare to leave.
Dunk
(Narrating) He, he meant to be a benefit to those around him.
Dunk watches Arlan hand one of the commoners a coin.
Arlan
It did not make him rich. He held no lands, sired no children.
Further down the road, Arlan sings.
Arlan
Off to Ashford to see a fair maid
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho
I'll make her my love
and we'll rest in the shade
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho
Come on, Dunk!
Later in the evening, the duo sits under a tree as it rains.
Dunk
(Narrating) He wanted for nothing but the open air.
Dunk cuts off a chunk of some food and hands it to Arlan.
Dunk
(Narrating) And a fire to warm his feet at.
They both laugh and eat. Cut to the roadside during the day as the duo spars.
Dunk
(Narrating) His skills as a warrior were…
As Dunk hits at Arlan with a hammer, the latter falls backwards into the grass.
Dunk
(Narrating) …unsung, but he had a chin cut from granite.
Dunk helps Arlan up.
Arlan
Come on.
Dunk
(Narrating) And he was a dogged fighter.
They resume sparring.
Dunk
(Narrating) He just, he kept on coming.
Some time later, they continue to ride through the wilderness. Arlan slumps a bit in the saddle as he sings.
Arlan
I'll steal a sweet kiss from the point of my blade
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho
He pants and comes to a stop. Dunk rides up besides him.
Dunk
(Narrating) House Florent, Ser Arlan took service in your guard when your lord father lost his sight.
Arlan nods to Dunk before he continues.
Arlan
I'll make her my love and we'll rest in the shade
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho
Dunk
(Narrating) House Hayford, Ser Arlan fought side by side with your brothers at the Redgrass. His squire, his, his own nephew, was killed in the battle.
Dunk watches Arlan ride off.
Scene 3

Cut To: Ashford, Day

70 lines
Cut to a medium shot of Dunk standing in the tournament grounds.
Dunk
House Tyrell.
Leo Tyrell sits, eating as he listens to Dunk.
Dunk
Ser Arlan often spoke of his time in your service as his very finest. He said it was you, m'lord, who told him that a hedge knight was the bridge between lords and the smallfolk.
Lord Tyrell spits.
Leo Tyrell
I know him not, man.
Dunk grimaces. Cut to him and egg walking around the grounds.
Egg
Was he a shit knight?
Dunk
He was not a shit knight.
Egg
Well, he can't have been a very good one if no one remembers him.
Dunk
Pick up your feet, come on.
Egg
This is undignified, ser.
Dunk
So, hie back to camp and leave me be, if it please you.
Egg
I would not leave you, ser, not while you must suffer your master dying over and over again. Though it does not seem like these lords are even listening to you.
Dunk
Nothing I can do about that.
Egg
You are a knight of the realm, ser. You can say fuck their permission. Ride into the lists, call out Longthorn Tyrell, and turn his arsehole into a lance-hole.
Dunk
That's enough now.
Egg
Why do you treat these royal lapdogs like they're your betters?
Dunk
They are my betters. You're too brazen for your own good. Ser Arlan was a great knight. Someone will remember him.
They hear horns blow in the distance. A crowd begins to gather. Dunk grabs a man walking past.
Dunk
Hey. Who's come?
Man
Can't you see the banners, you giant cunt?
Dunk and Egg watch a procession with Targaryen heraldry ride into the tournament grounds.
Egg
Perhaps I should go back, ser, check on the camp. Make sure no thieves have been nosing about.
Dunk
Aye. I have an idea.
Egg
Can I have your sword to run people off with? Or a mace?
Dunk hands him Chestnut's lead.
Dunk
You have a knife. That's enough. You'd best be here when I come back. Rob me, and I'll hunt you down, with dogs.
Egg
You don't have dogs.
Dunk
I'll get some.
Egg
Where?
Dunk barks. Egg jumps before he leaves. Dunk watches the procession go by.
Herald
Our Lord of Ashford humbly welcomes the great and honorable—
Cut inside the main keep. A herald announces the arrival of the Targaryens.
Herald
—Baelor Targaryen, firstborn son of King Daeron the Good.
Dunk walks through a stable towards the arriving party.
Herald
Prince of Dragonstone, Hand of the King, and heir to the Iron Throne.
Baelor stops his horse and dismounts nearby. Maekar rides into frame.
Herald
And his brother, Maekar.
Maekar dismounts. Baelor approaches Lord Ashford and his daughter.
Baelor
My Lord of Ashford.
Lord Ashford
It's a great honor to receive Your Grace.
Baelor
It's a great honor to be received.
Lord Ashford
My daughter, Gwin.
Dunk watches as Baelor and the Ashfords enter the castle.
Aerion
Boy, stop gaping. See to my horse.
Aerion rides up alongside Dunk.
Dunk
I'm not a stable boy, m'lord.
Aerion
Not clever enough? Well, if you can't manage horses, then fetch me some wine and a pretty wench.
Dunk
Oh, m'lord pardons. I'm, I'm no serving man, either.
Aerion dismounts.
Dunk
I have the honor to be a knight.
A man leads Aerion's horse away.
Aerion
Oh. Well… knighthood has fallen on sad days.
He walks into the keep. As he leaves, his horse kicks the man leading it.
Dunk
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy, easy.
He comforts the horse while another man drags the injured man away.
Man
Easy now, come on.
Dunk
Come on. It's okay. It's okay.
Dunk leads Aerion's horse into the stable.
Dunk
There you are, girl. Far too many people around. I agree.
Donnel
(Offscreen) The pretty ones are always temperamental.
Dunk
Ah, she just got a bit excited, that's all.
Roland
(Offscreen) He meant the princeling, not the palfrey.
Dunk Turns To See Two Members Of The Kingsguard Standing Nearby
Donnel of Duskendale and Roland Crakehall.
Dunk
Excuse me, m'lords. I'm Ser Duncan the Tall.
Roland
Well met. I'm Ser Roland Crakehall, and this is my sworn brother, Ser Donnel of Duskendale. Gods, boy. Do you ride your horse into battle or does it ride you?
Donnel
Forgive Ser Roland. It's not often he must look up to cast his eyes down.
Roland
Yes, yes, I'm quite the rascal. Now, tell me, Ser Duncan, is there a proper place to shit around here?
Dunk
Uh, not really, no.
Scene 4

Scene 4

70 lines
Roland sighs and walks away.
Donnel
A man of such birth has never deigned to disturb his arsehole with hay.
Dunk
He'll deign before the week is out, I'd wager.
Donnel
Where are you from, man? You don't smell House-bred.
Dunk
No place, really.
Donnel
I know it. My family's from there.
Dunk
You're not a Darklyn of Duskendale?
Donnel
We were crabbers at Duskendale. Far back as it goes.
Another member of the Kingsguard, Willem Wylde, calls from nearby.
Willem
Ser Donnel?
Donnel turns to leave.
Dunk
May I ask, ser, how the son of a crabber came to have the honor of being a knight in the Kingsguard?
Donnel turns back.
Donnel
Same way we became crabbers.
He leaves.
Dunk
(Muttering) "Same way we became..."
Man
Are you Baelor Targaryen?
Dunk sees a man next to him leading a horse.
Dunk
No.
Man
Then would you move the fuck out of the way?
Dunk
Yeah. Yeah. Of course. Apologies. Sorry.
He moves out of the way and overhears some of the castle's servants.
Woman
The princes be needing their fucking hands washed!
Girl
I'm on my way, ma'am.
Dunk sees the girl enter the castle through a side door. He looks around for a moment before following inside. He walks through the dingy servant tunnels for a minute before emerging into a larger hallway. He overhears conversation from a hall nearby.
Lord Ashford
The spring rains have swollen many of our streams. Perhaps the young princes have just been delayed?
In the hall, a group approaches a large table including Lord Ashford, Plummer, Baelor, and Maekar.
Maekar
Fuck me. "Delayed." They're not delayed.
Baelor
Do not curse our gracious host.
Maekar
I said "fuck me," not "fuck him." It's not his fault Father bade us attend this miserable circus.
Dunk skulks through the hallway outside to eavesdrop, looking through some carved holes in the wall to see the group inside.
Baelor
Might we discuss this another time?
Maekar
I say we go hunting.
Baelor washes his hands in a bowl held by a servant girl.
Baelor
Daeron has done this before. You should not have commanded him to enter the lists.
Someone behind Dunk shushes him. He turns to see Gwin Ashford.
Gwin
(Whispering) The prince's sons are missing.
Maekar
You'd be more concerned if it was your son, I wager.
Dunk
(Whispering) Oh.
Gwin
(Whispering) Probably dead.
Dunk
(Whispering) Dead?
Gwin
(Whispering) Wars have started for less.
He nods. She appraises him for a moment.
Gwin
(Whispering) You're big and stupid.
She puts her hands in his face suddenly, startling him, before she runs off.
Baelor
They have only been missing a day. No doubt, Ser Roland will turn him up and Aegon along with him.
Maekar
When the tourney is over, perhaps.
Baelor
Daeron belongs on a tourney field no more than Aerys or Rhaegel.
Maekar
By which you mean he'd sooner ride a whore than a horse.
Baelor
That is not what I said.
Maekar sits down at the table. Dunk inches closer to the entrance.
Maekar
I do not need to be reminded of my son's failings. He can change. He will change, gods be damned. Or I swear, I'll see him dead.
Maekar catches the edge of Dunk's cloak in the doorway and gets up.
Maekar
You. Who are you? What do you mean by spying on us? Show yourself.
Dunk walks out.
Dunk
My Lords, I do apologize for my interruption. I, um… I have asked Ser Manfred Dondarrion to vouch for me so that I might enter the lists, but he has refused to do so.
Maekar
Who? What the fuck is going on?
Baelor
We are the intruders here, brother. Come closer, ser.
Dunk walks further into the room. Maekar sits back down.
Dunk
And others, too. You see, they say they know not Ser Arlan of Pennytree. But he served them. I swear it. I have his sword and shield.
Lord Ashford
Sword and shield do not make a knight. Mm?
He smiles and glances at Maekar, who makes no response. His smile drops and he turns back to Dunk.
Lord Ashford
Unless you have better proof to support what you say. Some writing or—
Dunk
Do you remember him, Your Grace? It was many years ago. You may have forgotten.
Ser Arlan of Pennytree. He never won a tourney that I know. But he never shamed himself, either.
Dunk
Yes, ser. I mean, no. No, he didn't.
Baelor
He overthrew Lord Stokeworth in the melee at King's Landing and years before, he unhorsed the Grey Lion himself.
Dunk
He told me of that many a time.
Baelor
Then, you will recall the Grey Lion's true name, I have no doubt.
Dunk says nothing for a moment. Plummer looks at him expectantly.
Scene 5

Scene 5

38 lines
Dunk
Ser Damon Lannister. The Grey Lion, he's Lord of Casterly Rock now.
Baelor
So he is. And enters the lists upon the morrow.
Baelor goes to sit down.
Maekar
How can you possibly remember some fucking hedge knight who chanced to unhorse Damon Lannister sixteen years ago?
Baelor
I make it a practice to learn all I can of my foes.
Maekar
And why would you deign to joust with a hedge knight?
Baelor
It was many years past, at Storm's End. Lord Baratheon held a hastilude to celebrate the birth of a grandson. The lots made Ser Arlan my opponent in the first tilt. We broke four lances before I finally unhorsed him.
Dunk
It was seven.
Maekar laughs. Plummer looks at Dunk, nervous.
Dunk
I-I believe.
Baelor
Tales grow in the telling, I know. Do not think ill of your old master, but it was four lances only, I fear.
Dunk throws himself into a kneeling position before the table.
Dunk
As you say, Your Grace. It was four. I do apologize. The old man, Ser Arlan, he used to say that I was thick as a castle wall and slow as an aurochs.
Baelor
No harm was done, ser. Rise.
Dunk rises.
Dunk
You gave him back his horse and armor and took no ransom. Ser Arlan often told me that you were the soul of chivalry—
Maekar
Ugh.
Dunk
—and that one day, the Seven Kingdoms would be safe in your hands.
Baelor
Not for many years yet, I pray.
Dunk
No, I did not mean that the King should—
Baelor
You wish to enter the lists. Is that it?
Dunk
Yes.
Baelor
The decision rests with the master of the games, but I see no reason to deny you.
Plummer
As you say, m'lord.
Plummer nods curtly at Dunk.
Dunk
Your Grace—
Maekar
Very well, ser, You are grateful. Now, fuck off!
Baelor
You must forgive my brother, ser. His sons went astray on the way here, and he fears for them.
Dunk
Of course. I trust they will not be found dead.
Maekar looks at Dunk with an inscrutable expression. Plummer's eyes widen. Dunk bows and begins to leave.
Baelor
Ser. You are not of Ser Arlan's blood?
Dunk turns back.
Dunk
No, I am not.
Baelor
By law, only a trueborn son is entitled to inherit a knight's arms. You must needs find a new device, ser. A sigil of your own.
Dunk
I will. Thank you again, Your Grace. I will fight bravely. You'll see.
He bows again and walks out to the right.
Dunk
It's this way.
He turns around and goes the other way.

Cut To: Ext. Ashford, Day

70 lines
Cut to the puppetry show. Several puppeteers carry around a wooden doll dressed in colorful clothes.
Tanselle
You are no knight. You are Florian the Fool.
Dunk watches the show from the edge of the tent, drinking. The crowd gasps and cheers along with the show as the actors and puppeteers move around. Tanselle is dressed in an extravagant outfit on stilts.
Florian Actor
I am, my lady. As great a fool as ever lived.
Egg sits in the crowd, watching with some other young children.
Florian Actor
And as great a knight as well!
The crowd cheers.
Tanselle
A fool and a knight? I have never heard of such a thing.
Florian Actor
Sweet lady. All men are fools, and all men are knights where women are concerned.
Dunk and the rest of the crowd laugh. As the show ends, Dunk smiles at Tanselle. Cut to the back of the tent some time later. Dunk and Egg approach Tanselle in the backstage area.
Dunk
Hello there.
Tanselle turns to the duo. Dunk tosses her a coin.
Dunk
And one for last night.
He hands her another coin.
Egg
That was great. How'd you do the fire tricks?
Tanselle
Oh.
She grabs some pollen and tosses it through a nearby candle, creating a brief burst of fire.
Egg
Is it pollen?
Tanselle
Yeah, we collect it on the way.
Egg
I've never seen such giant puppets. Do you make them yourself?
Tanselle
My uncle builds them, but I paint.
Dunk
Could you paint something for me? I have the coin to pay. I, um, just…
He pulls his shield off his back and displays Arlan's coat of arms.
Dunk
I need to paint something over the chalice.
Tanselle
Well, what would you want?
Dunk
Um… I… I don't actually know. I, uh… Sorry, you must think me a fool.
Tanselle
All men are fools, all men are knights.
Dunk
Mm. Um.
He says nothing for a few moments, clearing his throat.
Tanselle
The gray is a bit drab.
Dunk
Aye. Yeah, the field should be the color of sunset 'cause the old man always liked sunsets and, uh…
Egg
An elm tree! A big one. Like the one by the river with the brown trunk and the green branches.
Dunk
Aye. An elm tree, that would serve. But with a shooting star above. Could you do that?
Tanselle
Mm-hmm.
Dunk
Thank you, um, I'm Ser Duncan the Tall.
She laughs.
Tanselle
Um, I'm Tanselle. The boys used to call me Tanselle Too-Tall.
Dunk
You're not too tall. I mean, you're just right for, ah…
Egg shoots Dunk a look.
Tanselle
For?
Egg
Puppets.
Dunk
Yeah, puppets. Okay, I'll, um…
He turns to leave.
Tanselle
Wait, the shield.
Dunk
Yes, sorry. The shield.
Tanselle
Yeah.
He hands her the shield.
Cut elsewhere on the tourney grounds. Dunk and Egg sit at a bench.
Dunk
Was that ill-handled?
Egg
Hm?
Dunk
The puppet girl.
Egg
Oh.
Dunk
It, it just, It didn't feel well-handled.
Egg
She is painting your shield.
Dunk
Yeah, for pay.
Egg
You are both gigantic.
Cut to a shot from behind them, revealing they're spectating a game of tug of war.
Dunk
Is that promising?
Egg
It's a… commonality.
Dunk
Right, yeah. Commonality.
They watch Lyonel Baratheon talk with one of the men at the tug of war before walking off.
Egg
Do you think I'll ever make a knight one day?
Dunk
Sure, why not? You're a likely lad.
Egg
I'm a bit puny.
Dunk
You'll grow.
Egg
Even for my age. Everyone's always told me so.
Dunk
Everyone's always told me I was stupid.
Egg looks at him for a few moments expectantly.
Egg
And?
Dunk
Hm?
Scene 7

Scene 7

39 lines
Egg
Hm? What?
Dunk
What?
Egg
What did you do when people said you were stupid, ser?
Dunk
What business is that of yours? My problems are my own.
Egg
I thought… Aren't you trying to help me?
Dunk
Help you what? Grow?
Lyonel suddenly points at Dunk.
Lyonel
Yes! Hedge knight, you.
He walks over and tosses Dunk's drink out.
Lyonel
What is this piss froth? I need muscle. Will you heed my call to war?
He laughs and slaps Dunk's cheek before he can respond.
Lyonel
Aha! Good.
Lyonel walks off and grabs some more men.
Lyonel
Go! Get up, come.
Cut to the tug of war about to start.
Knight
Ready!
Dunk, Lyonel, and several other members of their team dry their hands. Lyonel taps a man who hasn't done so yet.
Lyonel
Hey! Dry those palms, you clam-handed cunt. We're not in your sister's chambers now.
Man
Ready!
The other team prepares. After a moment, a man signals for the game to begin. People on both teams and in the crowd shout.
Lyonel
If we lose this, I'll be drowning your firstborn!
Knight
Pull! Pull!
Lyonel
Pull, you cunt-strapped dandelions!
Both teams struggle. Lyonel suddenly leaves.
Lyonel
I'll be back. I'll be back! I'll be back.
Dunk
Lyonel! What are you doing?
Lyonel
I'm thirsty.
Dunk
Lyonel!
Dunk slides forward in the mud.
Knight
Pull!
Egg struggles, pulling himself up onto the rope. Lyonel steals a drink from a man nearby.
Lyonel
I'm thirsty, cunt.
He sips.
Lyonel
I'm thirsty!
Dunk struggles backward. The other team gets pulled a few inches forward. Lyonel slaps Dunk's butt and rejoins the team.
Lyonel
Looking good.
He grabs the rope just behind Egg.
Lyonel
Fucking pull!
The front man on the other team falls into the mud as Dunk, Egg, and Lyonel's team pulls them over the line. They cheer as the crowd swarms around them.
Scene 8

Cut To: Ashford, Night

66 lines
Cut to the tourney grounds later than night. Dunk walks past a torch whirler and finds an armorer's station. He looks at a set of armor before approaching the armorer, Steely Pate.
Dunk
You do good work.
Pate
None better.
Dunk
I need some armor on the morrow. Gorget, greaves, and great helm.
Pate
Are you jousting or working?
Dunk
Both, perhaps.
Pate turns his head. His eyes slowly rise up to Dunk's.
Pate
You're a big one, though I've armored bigger.
Pate gets up.
Pate
I have some pieces in the wagon that might do. Nothing prettied up with gold or silver, like. Just good steel, strong and plain.
He brings out a helmet and tosses it to Dunk.
Pate
I make helms that look like helms, not winged pigs and fancy foreign fruit. But mine'll serve you better if you take a lance in the face.
Dunk
That's all I want. How much?
Pate
Eight hundred stag, for I'm feeling kindly.
Dunk
Eight hundred? Perhaps I could trade you some armor made for a smaller man. A half helm, a mail hauberk.
Pate
Steely Pate sells only his own work.
Dunk puts the helmet down and makes to leave.
Pate
I could make use of the metal. If it's not too rusted, I'll take it and armor you for six hundred.
Dunk
I only have two stags.
Pate
Buys you a day.
Dunk pays Pate.
Pate
Send your squire along with the rest, or else I'll sell me wares to the next man.
Dunk
You'll get it all back, I swear it. I mean to be a champion here.
Pate
Do you, now? And the others all came just, just to cheer you on?
Dunk doesn't respond. Cut to Dunk and Sweetfoot elsewhere on the grounds, later in the night.
Dunk
Is there any measure of a fool I fail to meet? If I win, I'll come back and buy you again. I promise. Best girl.
He pats Sweetfoot. Cut to the two in a stable later. A handler puts a pile of coins in Dunk's hand while taking Sweetfoot's reins. He hands one of the coins back.
Dunk
That's for her. See she has some oats tonight, yeah?
The handler leads Sweetfoot away.
Dunk
And an apple, too.
He closes the stable gate and walks away. Cut to elsewhere in the grounds. Dunk joins Egg at a table, carrying two drinks.
Dunk
No turning back now, I suppose. You know, the old man lived nigh on years and was never a champion.
Egg
There's a bug in my cider.
Dunk
If I could call myself a champion of Ashford Meadow, even for an hour, maybe some great house might take me into its service. Perhaps even House Targaryen.
Egg
You suppose the dragon house employs many hedge knights, ser?
Dunk
Enough of that. I'll have you know Ser Donnel of the Kingsguard is but the son of a crabber.
Egg
Ser Donnel? Of Duskendale?
Dunk
Yeah.
Egg
His father owns half the crabbing fleets in Westeros.
Dunk
What? How would you know?
Egg
I like fishing.
A horn blows in the distance.
Egg
It's time!
They both get up.
Dunk
Right, come on, let's go. Come on, pick your feet up. Let's go.
They join the crowd of spectators as everyone makes their way to the field.
Egg
Wait for me!
Another horn blows.
Egg
Ser Duncan! Ser Duncan!
Dunk looks into the crowd behind him and finds Egg, lifting him up onto his shoulders.
Dunk
You alright?
Egg
Yeah.
Knights ride around as the crowd gathers. Dunk sees a group of nobles in a viewing gallery opposite the onlookers, including the Targaryens. Baelor, Maekar, Aerion, and Lord Ashford sit in the front row. Medgar Tyrell knight rides up in front of the crowd, holding a fish.
Medgar
For the new gods and old!
He bites the head off of the fish. Egg cheers along with the crowd. Medgar tosses the fish into the crowd. The starting knights prepare to joust, many shouting over each other for their lances and armor.
Valarr
Helmet!
Dunk
Hey, who's that?
Egg
Prince Valarr, Baelor's son. Second in line to the throne.
Valarr
Shield!
Dunk
He's the favorite, I'd wager.
Egg
I'll take that bet, ser.
Everyone quiets down as the knights take their starting positions.
Commoner
Lord Ashford fucks his sheep!
Lord Ashford grimaces. A man blows a horn. The jousting begins. The crowd cheers as the jousters crash together. Dunk watches nervously. The jousters frantically prepare for their second charges. Egg stops cheering, watching the squires lift lances. He looks down at his own hands.
Egg
Ser. Put me down, ser.
Dunk lets Egg down. Egg walks to the edge of the fence. As they resume watching, Valarr knocks another knight off his horse. A chaotic chain reaction leads to another knight getting knocked down and frantically hopping onto another passing horse. Images flash in Dunk's mind. He carries Arlan to his grave and watches the rain drench his body.
Scene 9

Cut To: Ext. Wilderness, Night

7 lines
Egg plays with a sharp stick as a campfire burns.
Egg
Hyah! Hyah! Die! Do you yield, Blackfyre bastards?
He stops when he sees Dunk sitting nearby unenthusiastically.
Egg
Splendid riding tonight. Mm, the part with the fish was disgusting.
Dunk makes no response.
Egg
Something the matter, ser?
Do great knights live in the hedges and die by the side of a muddy road? (He scoffs.) I think not. Ser Arlan wasn't gifted with sword or lance, and he drank, and he whored, and he was a hard man to know. He made no friends, either. He lived nigh on sixty years and never was a champion. What chance do I have, truly? But he was good to me. I wasn't his family, but he kept me like we were. He raised me to be an honorable man. And all these noble lords can't even remember his name. His name was Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and I am his legacy. On the morrow, we will show them what his hand has wrought.
